Sinus headaches are relatively common during both acute and chronic sinus conditions. They tend to occur in the areas where the sinuses sit on the face: the middle of the forehead, around the eyes, and near the cheekbones. Sinus headaches often are accompanied by facial pain and/or tenderness. Though migraines are frequently misdiagnosed as sinus headaches, if you know you have a sinus headache and do not have other symptoms, it may be confusing. Let’s look at the question, “Why do I have a sinus headache but no congestion?”

This can happen and is most frequently seen in people with a history of allergies or repeated/chronic sinus conditions. Therefore, your sinuses may be irritated, but not necessarily congested. Conversely, the congestion may only be in the sinuses and has not traveled down the nasal cavities. Thus, it may seem like you are not congested.

If you experience auras, it is likely that you are experiencing a migraine and not a sinus headache. Regardless of the cause of your headache, the treatment recommendations are often the same: stay hydrated, get some sleep, and take over-the-counter medications. You may also try a cold compress.
